When you’re going away either on holiday or with work, it can be hard to know where to get the best care for your dog.

But you know you want someone who will treat your dog like a member of their family and look after them as well as you do, from the second you leave until the moment you come back.  So where do you start?

There are a number of options. You could book them into a local kennels, hire a pet sitter, or you can take them to a home-boarding centre.

But how do you know what the difference is, and how do you know what is best for your individual dog?  After all, they all have different needs and may thrive better in certain environments than other dogs.

Licensed Home Boarder

Kennels

A popular option among dog owners.  Generally speaking, kennels are able to accommodate a larger number of dogs.

Many dogs get on really well at kennels, and this is largely down to the relationship they build with staff and the attention they receive.

There are so many fantastic kennels available, but it’s really important to do your research before you book your place.

However, the size, location and facilities at kennels can vary so it’s best to visit the facilities, check out their website for photos and reviews and find out exactly what the routine will be for your dog throughout their stay.

This way, you can make an informed decision about which kennel can provide the best, most secure and comfortable environment where your dog will get plenty of attention, care and exercise.

Pet Sitting

Another option is hiring a professional pet sitter to stay at your house while they’re looking after your dog.  This means that your dog will be getting 1:1 attention in the comfort of their own home.

It’s a good idea to get references and check out reviews before you decide which pet sitter will be the best choice for your dog.

And before you set off on your travels, arrange for your chosen pet sitter to meet and spend some time with your pet so that you can assess how your pet feels around them, and go over any details about the level of care that they need.

Home-Boarding Centres

Or how about you let your pet go on a fun holiday too?  If you want your dog to get plenty of exercise and fuss in a home-from-home environment, but you don’t fancy someone else staying in your house while you’re not there, home-boarding could be the perfect solution.

Licensed home-boarding centres basically open up their homes for your dog to move into, meaning they get dedicated care in a family environment.

Tails ‘A’ Waggin

Sabrina Breecher, owner of Tails ‘A’ Waggin, a licensed home-boarding centre near Doncaster, explains exactly what to expect when home-boarding your dog.

“Home-boarding is a fantastic way of making sure that your dog gets well looked after while you’re away, in a setting similar to their own home environment.

Here at Tails ‘A’ Waggin, I treat all of our dog guests as members of my own family.  As a licenced home-boarder, there are four designated areas for dogs within my home.  This means that they can roam freely between the kitchen, living room, dining room and bedroom, rather than being confined to one space.

I try to replicate your home setting, so if your dog is used to sleeping on a sofa, then they can spend the night on ours.  Or if they prefer to sleep in their crate, then I can set this up for them wherever they feel the most comfortable.  Owners bring their dog’s bedding and toys with them as they tend to settle in more quickly with familiar smells around them.

Home Boarding Doncaster

Because I’ve welcomed 100’s of dogs into my home over the last 3 years, I understand that each dog has its own individual character and needs.  That really is one of the greatest pleasures of running a home-boarding service.  I get to know and love so many different dogs, and so many of them come back to stay with me time and again.

My licence allows me to look after four dogs at a time, and I ensure that all dogs are vaccinated, well socialised and get on well with children.  I have a ten-year-old daughter who just loves to spend time getting to know all the different dogs that I look after, and we’ll be welcoming our own puppy to the Tails ‘A’ Waggin family in the next few weeks too.

In addition, I have a large, secure garden and I am planning to develop an agility area in the near future.  All dogs in my care get lots of exercise, and there are so many fantastic places to walk in this area they will never get bored of exploring.”

Tails ‘A’ Waggin also provides a dog walking and pet visit service.  So, your dog can meet and play with other dogs too, a great way to build on their socialisation skills and therefore develop their confidence.

The great thing about home-boarding is that all dogs in our care get the love and attention that they are missing while you’re away, so you can relax and enjoy your trip knowing they are in great hands.”
