Are you looking for a dog walker near you?

With nearly 9 million pet dogs in the UK, it is clear we are a nation of dog lovers, and leisurely strolls in the country with your furbaby are the perfect way to unwind.

We all want what’s best for our dogs, but sometimes work and other commitments can make it more difficult to make sure your dog gets the care and attention that they need.

Thankfully, there are thousands of professional dog walkers around the UK who can help take care of your dog while you’re out.

Hiring a professional dog walker is also a great option if you can’t walk long distances or are recovering from an injury or illness.

Where to find professional dog walkers

What is Professional Dog Walking?

Professional Dog Walkers are usually individuals who have a real passion for animals and have chosen to dedicate their career to working with dogs.

They can be booked to collect your dog from home at a time that suits you, take them for a long walk, and then return them home.

Dogs can be walked on their own or in groups, depending on what works best for your dog, and it gives you peace of mind that they’re having some fun while you’re away.

Professional Dog Walkers often offer pet-sitting services too, so if you’re away overnight they can stay and look after your dog in the comfort of their own home.

What do I need to know about professional Dog Walkers?

The most important thing is to find someone that both you and your dog are comfortable with and trust.  Afterall, they will be taking responsibility for your precious pup, and having access to your home.

When you are looking for someone, make sure you read reviews, check for insurance and find out everything you can about their business.  This way you can make sure you are choosing someone who fits with your expectations.

For example, do you want someone who is qualified in Canine First Aid? Are you looking for someone who has experience with a particular breed? Or do you want someone who is DBS Checked?

Dog walkers generally like to get to know you and your dog before they start the walking schedule.  This way you can all build a relationship and discuss any dietary, exercise or health needs before you get started.

Embark Pet Services

Emily Harker runs Embark Pet Services; a professional dog walking and pet sitting business in Auckley, Doncaster.  Emily is qualified in Animal Management and Canine First Aid, she is also fully-insured and DBS checked, so you know your dogs are in the best hands.

“I absolutely love getting to spend every day with dogs.  I have always wanted to set up my own dog walking business, and after gaining tons of experience in a veterinary practice and at the RSPCA, I decided I was ready to start my dream business as a professional dog walker.

Before I start working with a new client I make sure I get to know them and their dogs. This way I know exactly what the dogs need during their visit, how they prefer to be walked (e.g. off or on-lead, in groups or alone), and if there are any specific dietary or medical needs.

I love my job because I get to know the dogs really well and seeing them so happy exploring new places is just lovely.  The owners get to see the real benefits too, they can come home from work after a busy day and relax, knowing their dogs have had plenty of exercise, attention and fun.

I work with such a wide range of clients, and often part of my job includes working on behavioural habits too.  For example, one of the dogs could be particularly stubborn on walks, but after lots of patience, clear communication and tons of love he now walks perfectly.

When it’s too warm to go for a walk we tend to play brain games such as scent work, hide and seek and treat puzzles.  The dogs absolutely love it and it’s a great way to exercise them without exposing them to the hot weather.

I also have a real interest in Canine Nutrition and I am developing a range of home-made, healthy treats which will be available for sale soon, meaning my four-legged clients will get even more spoiled than they already do!”
